Description

Cuaba cigars were launched in 1996. Cuaba is made at the Briones Montoto factory (before the revolution, the factory was called "Romeo y Julieta"). The tobacco for the factory was supplied from the best plantations of Vuelta Abajo. This young cigar brand quickly won the hearts of smokers. On November 19, 1996, the official presentation of the cigars, imbued with a spirit of aristocracy, was held in London at the magnificent Claridge's Hotel; it was conducted by the President of Habanos S.A., Francisco Linares. For a long fourteen years after Cohiba, aficionados had waited for a new Cuban cigar. Initially, the cigars were sold only on the UK market. This respect shown to London was not without reason. The cigars came to be thanks to Hunters & Frankau, the exclusive distributor of Cuban cigars in the UK. Nicholas Freeman, the company's director, approached Habanos S.A. with a request to meet the market demand for figurados. They could not refuse their long-time partner. The name of the cigar comes from the name of a plant in the Taino language. This plant was known for its property of burning well. The shrub still grows on the island and was used for lighting cigars during religious ceremonies. The proverb "to burn like a Cuaba" is still used by Cuban farmers, although with the arrival of the cigars, its meaning changed. The cigar line to this day is very small, comprising only seven vitolas. All Cuaba cigars are released exclusively in the figurado format. At the beginning of the 19th century, the figurado format was the most in-demand among cigars, but market trends changed, and by 1970 they were practically no longer produced in Cuba. A generation of torcedores (rollers) had grown up who were incapable of correctly rolling figurados. To correct this situation, a famous veteran of the Cuban cigar industry, Carlos Izquierdo González, was invited and asked to teach a team of torcedores the subtle craft. The first four vitolas were small. It was the small size that became very popular.
